One Potato, Two Potato (1964) Blu-ray Releases This October From STUDIOCANAL
This October, STUDIOCANAL will release a newly restored Blu-ray edition of Larry Peerce’s One Potato, Two Potato (1964) in the UK.
One of the first American films to openly depict interracial marriage, it arrived three years before Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and remains a powerful drama about love, family, and prejudice.
Barbara Barrie’s performance won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, and the screenplay earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
About the Film & Synopsis
Directed by Larry Peerce (The Incident, Goodbye Columbus), One Potato, Two Potato is a black-and-white drama set in the racially charged climate of 1960s America.
Julie (Barbara Barrie), a divorced white mother, meets Frank (Bernie Hamilton), an African-American co-worker, at a factory job. Their friendship turns to romance, and the two marry, creating a loving blended family with Julie’s young daughter, Ellen.
Tensions arise from Frank’s father, William, who initially disapproves of the marriage, and later from Julie’s ex-husband, Joe (Richard Mulligan). When Joe discovers Ellen is being raised in a Black household, he petitions for custody, setting the stage for a deeply emotional courtroom battle that challenges societal norms.
Filmed on location in Painesville, Ohio, the film captures both the warmth of family life and the harsh realities of systemic bias.
